Police in Kompong Chhnang province are searching for two brothers suspected of raping a 13-year-old girl on two separate occasions in Rolae Ba’ier district, provincial chief of anti-human trafficking police Prak Saony said yesterday.
Hun Sophea, 23, allegedly raped the victim in early 2009 then fled to Phnom Penh while his brother Hun Teth, 21, allegedly raped the same girl at the end of the year, Ms Saony said.
The teenage victim and her father were living in same house as the brothers when the attacks took place, she added.
“I am preparing to file a complaint and send it to the court [today],” Ms Saony said. “After the rapes, the suspects threatened to kill the victim if the story got out,” she said, adding that the victim was taken to the provincial hospital for a medical examination related to the rape and will be sent to the provincial women affairs department to live during the investigation.
Sam Chankea, provincial coordinator for local human rights group Adhoc, said yesterday that he only learned of the case on Saturday and had few details. In general, he said, police need to do more to protect children from sexual abuse, particularly ensuring that rapists are punished in court for their crimes.
“The authorities must pay more attention to rape cases…and arrest suspects committing the illegal acts,” he said.
