Boeng Kak’s ‘Mummy’ Receives Land Title

The governor of Phnom Penh’s Daun Penh district said Tuesday that land titles were handed to two more families from the Boeng Kak neighborhood, including that of 76-year-old land rights activist Nget Khun, known also as “Mummy.”

Ms. Khun and Kim Vanny were handed land titles to 144- and 174-square-meter plots, respectively, in Boeng Kak’s village 22, said district governor Kuoch Chamroeun.

Ms. Khun has become well known for protesting the mass eviction of Boeng Kak at the hands of CPP Senator Lao Meng Khin’s real-estate company, Shukaku.

She was among the seven women arrested and summarily convicted in November for blocking part of Monivong Boulevard with a bed to protest the neighborhood’s repeated flooding and released in April after getting their one-year sentences reduced to time served.

On Tuesday, Ms. Khun said she would continue to demonstrate alongside Boeng Kak families that still have not received land titles.

“I have received the land title, but I will continue to join with the rest of families,” she said.

City Hall says no more than seven families are still waiting. The activists say there are 38.
