Australian Embassy Staffer Shot in Drive-By Shooting

An employee of the Australian Embassy in Phnom Penh was critically injured after being shot three times by two men on motorbikes as he drove his car in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district Wednesday, according to police and a hospital official.

Hean Vuthy, 57, was shot while driving his car through Boeng Tompun commune at about 6:15 p.m., said district police chief Hy Narin.

“My first conclusion is that this is a revenge case, but I cannot elaborate at this time,” Mr. Narin said Wednesday.

A doctor at Phnom Penh’s Calmette hospital confirmed the victim worked at the Australian Embassy and said he received two gunshot wounds to the neck and one on his left shoulder, but said he can still speak despite being in serious condition.
