Police have arrested one man and are searching for two more after an attack on seven workers at the Hun Sen Svay Rulom primary school in Kandal province Sunday.
One woman was raped and a man was stabbed by the three men during the assault, police said.
The man arrested, Pong Poy, 18, is the nephew of the deputy district governor of Sa’ang district, said Boeung Khoeun, the Sa’ang district police chief. Police are searching for Pong Poy’s brother, Pong Theary, 15, and a third man named Koeun Kosal, 22.
Seven construction workers were asleep at Hun Sen Svay Rulom primary school when three men armed with a handgun and knives forced their way into the area where the workers were sleeping, police said.
The robbers demanded the construction workers hand over their paychecks, which the men were supposed to receive on Sunday. The workers told the thieves that they had not yet been paid.
Five of the construction workers fled from the room, according to police.
Keo Puth, 37 and his wife, Chang Voeun, 33, remained in the room, however, police said. The robbers then allegedly stabbed Keo Puth in the stomach then took turns raping his wife, according to police.
Keo Puth and Chang Voeun were taken to Chey Chumnes hospital in Kandal province, police said.
The police have investigated six reported rapes so far this year, which is more than the district usually receives, said Boeung Khoeun, the Sa’ang district police chief. There have also been a number of incidents of domestic violence cases, the police chief said. He said that the police are trying to educate the people to avoid violent conflicts.
