Another Freedom Park Protester Arrested: City Hall

Authorities in Phnom Penh on Tuesday arrested another protester who took part in a demonstration at Freedom Park on July 15 last year that turned violent and has since been deemed an insurrection, City Hall spokesman Long Dimanche said last night.

Eleven CNRP activists were handed 7 to 20year prison terms last month on charges of leading or taking part in an insurrection, while seven opposition lawmakers have been charged with the same crimes.

Mr. Dimanche said last night that he had “not received full information yet,” but confirmed the arrest.

“The police have arrested one, and it is not CNRP,” he said.

“But we arrested one who committed violence on July 15 and the police are working on this.” Mr. Dimanche declined to answer further questions, saying: “Let police do their work.”

In a speech on Monday, Prime Minister Hun Sen called on authorities to continue searching for those involved in the July violence.

“Just continue arresting them all to face justice, especially a woman who hit and kicked people,” he said during the speech in Kandal province.
