Amphetamines Newest Danger

Amphetamine use is posing as the most serious drug test for Cambodia, national and UN drug control officials said Thursday at the conclusion of a three-day workshop in Phnom Penh.

John Irvin, UN Drugs Control Program project coordinator, said amphetamine production and use has dramatically increased in Southeast Asia and it will only be a matter of time before Cambodia faces the same problems as its neighbor Thailand where amphetamine use has exploded. “The big problem for the whole sub-region is methamphetamine use. It is the new phenomenon. It is in every country now,” Irvin said.

Lour Ramin, deputy secretary general of the National Authority for Combating Drugs, said Thursday that anti-narcotics police last month uncovered an amphetamine producing laboratory in Battambang province and police are searching for others.
