Cambodia’s first radio station with an all-women staff is scheduled to begin broadcasting on March 8, International Women’s Day.
The signal will be broadcast throughout Phnom Penh and surrounding provinces on FM 102, from 6 am to 10 pm, seven days a week.
The Women’s Media Center of Cambodia will create and broadcast shows that focus on Khmer culture, news bulletins, traffic reports and English classes in addition to programming of particular interest to women.
“The important thing is we want to encourage the women to express their views,” said Chea Sundaneth, programming chief. “Most of the radio stations have little about women with no female journalists and no radio programs produced by women.”
The Women’s Media Center has produced dramas and entertainment programming for other radio and television stations.
The radio station is the center’s largest-scale project yet.
“We want it to spread throughout the country, but I have been told by the government that that is impossible,” Chea Sundaneth said.
