The Ministry of Health has installed body-temperature sensors at airports and border checkpoints in an effort to prevent the deadly Ebola virus from entering Cambodia.
Ly Sovann, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that despite the low risk in the country of an outbreak of the disease that has killed 932 worldwide this year, authorities would not be taking any chances.
“If we find any suspected symptoms on the guest we will ask them to go to the hospital for treatment in order to avoid transmission to other people,” said Dr. Sovann.
He said people traveling from West African countries would be most rigorously scanned, including from Nigeria which has a large expatriate community in Cambodia.
The Ministry of Health has also sent quarantine officers to inspect travelers at the Phnom Penh and Siem Reap international airports and Poipet and Bavet International Border checkpoints.
Dr. Sovann said that the inspections would continue until the outbreak is brought under control, which medical experts have said could take months.
