Agriculture Department Official Arrested for Fraud

A deputy director of the Kompong Speu provincial agriculture department was arrested on Saturday after a businessman filed a complaint against him for breach of trust, a military police official said Monday.

Kit Vannak, chief of the military police’s penal bureau in Kompong Speu, said the suspect, Chhe Pich, 44, had been arrested while driving on National Road 51 in Samraong Tong district and was detained at the provincial prison on Sunday.

He said court prosecutor Keo Sothea had issued a warrant for Mr. Pich’s arrest on June 6 after receiving a complaint from an unnamed businessman.

“We don’t know how much money he took from the businessman,” he said, declining to comment further. Mr. Sothea said he was still investigating whether other suspects were involved in the alleged fraud, but refused to provide details.

“We cannot give you more information about the case, because this is a professional court investigation,” he said.
