Aeon Mall Officially Opens to Public

The $205 million Aeon Mall officially opened its doors to Cambodia’s consumers Monday, following a ceremony presided over by Prime Minister Hun Sen and Japanese Foreign Affairs Minister Fumio Kishida.

“This market was built on 100,000 square meters, so this is the biggest market, or as we say in Khmer, a giant market,” Mr. Hun Sen said to a crowd of about 500 gathered at the mall’s entrance.

The prime minister also announced that a direct flight between Cambodia’s major airports—in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap—and Tokyo’s Narita International Airport would launch in the near future.

The mall, which is operated by Japanese-based retail giant Aeon Co. Ltd.—a company with dozens of malls across Southeast Asia—is located off Phnom Penh’s Sothearos Boulevard and includes 190 stores, about 90 percent of which were open Monday morning, as well as an ice rink, food courts and a seven-screen Cineplex complete with bowling lanes.
