The Asian Development Bank will provide Cambodia with $30 million in loans for a five-year program designed to improve job training and employment prospects for women and poor people in the country, a statement released by the ADB on Friday says.
“Many Cambodians, especially the poor and women, cannot take part in the formal TVET [technical and vocational education and training] system due to low educational attainment and the grade 9 entry requirement for formal training,” the statement says.
The program, which will be supplemented by $2.6 million from the government, will introduce a certification system for students, an apprenticeship program for teachers and “quality assurance” measures for institutions offering vocational training courses, according to the ADB.
“The TVET [in Cambodia] remains in its infancy and needs reform and additional investment…in order to make a sustained contribution to the development of a skilled workforce,” the ADB’s principal education specialist Norman LaRocque says in the statement.
