5 Dead, 57 Injured in Crash

The second major accident in as many months on Route 4 has claimed the lives of five people, two of them monks, and injured 57 others, officials said.

The passengers were crammed aboard a two-ton Hyundai truck Feb 17, on their way to a Buddhist ceremony in Phnom Sruoch district, Kompong Speu province, when the driver lost control. The truck overturned, flipping five times before landing in a nearby field, Kompong Speu provincial military police Chief Men Siborn said.

Authorities took all 62 victims to Kompong Speu hospital, where doctors pronounced five of them dead. The other passengers remained hospitalized, Men Siborn said.

It was the second major fatal accident along Route 4 since a January incident killed six and injured 17. Authorities have blamed the most recent accident on an overloaded truck and an inexperienced driver driving too fast.
