Tek Bunvy was named Mr. Angkor 2015 after taking the top spot in the master’s category in the Angkor Bodybuilding Association’s (ABBA) fifth annual competition in Siem Reap City on Saturday, an official said Sunday.
Mr. Bunvy, 44, said he began training as a bodybuilder in 2007 at Rama Gym in Phnom Penh.
“I’m very happy about my success in this event,” Mr. Bunvy said by telephone Sunday.
“It’s very meaningful for me because this kind of sport is difficult to train for, and requires a lot of money [for food], so not many people can do it.”
According to ABBA secretary-general Rocky Lee, 75 athletes competed in this year’s event at the Ecole d’Hotellerie et Tourisme Paul Dubrule in eight categories, five based on muscle size and three focusing on fitness and physique.
The event’s organizer, Mr. Lee said he was pleased that more athletes participated in this year’s event than last year’s.
“I’m happy that the event was a success, and we didn’t want to focus on who won or lost, but we wanted to promote bodybuilding and health awareness,” he said.
