4 Questioned In Shooting

Three fishermen and an RCAF soldier have been questioned in connection with the fatal shooting of a fishing lot guard on Tonle Sap lake earlier this month, though no arrests have been made, authorities said.

“The court only issued a summons calling them in for further investigation but then we released them,” Srei Yuka, deputy military police commander in Siem Reap province, said Sunday.

It is still unclear who fired the first shot in the dispute on fishing lot 2 near the Battambang and Siem Reap province border, according to provincial court prosecutor So Vat. Guard Chroy Sokun was shot three times and killed during a late afternoon gunfight with six fishermen.

Three fishermen were also seriously injured, authorities said. While an alleged murder weapon has been found, authorities don’t know who it belongs to.

Chroy Sokun’s killing marks at least the fourth fishing-related death in less than two months.

in what observers say is likely to be an escalation of violence as fertile fishing grounds become more scarce.
