Three RCAF engineers died and four were seriously injured when a truck struck an anti-tank mine buried on a road in Battambang province, a military spokesman said Wednesday.
The truck was traveling through Svay Pao district Saturday with about eight people on board, said Ek Som On, chief of staff for Battambang-based Military Region 5. The construction engineers were on their way to help with a road-building project when an anti-tank mine exploded under the vehicle, he said.
Ek Som On said RCAF division 21 engineers were building a 50-km road between Svay Pao and Bavel districts through a former battlefield laced with mines. He estimated the anti-tank mine weighed about one ton.
The truck was completely damaged in the explosion.
