22 Arrested in Betting Bust

Nearly two dozen men and women were arrested late Tues­day for allegedly gambling in the house of a municipal police captain in Don Penh district, police said.

The 22 suspects, who were betting on card games, were questioned in court Wednesday after spending the night in police custody, according to Uch Thorn, deputy police chief for Don Penh district.

Police also seized playing cards, around 1 million riel (about $250), 300 baht (about $8) and an undisclosed amount of US dollars.

The owner of the house, police officer Chan Sokhun, who works in the municipal document de­partment, was arrested for allowing the gamblers to play cards in his home, Uch Thorn said. Chan Sokhun was released after questioning Wednesday.

Uch Thorn called the bust the largest crackdown on gamblers since 30 people were arrested four months ago.
