203 Kg of Marijuana Found Dumped in Mittapheap

Sihanoukville municipal police found 203 kg of marijuana mysteriously dumped at the side of a road in Mittapheap district on Wednesday, police said Thursday.

Chor Heng, municipal deputy police chief, said eyewitnesses reported seeing a green Toyota Land Cruiser pull over on Tuesday night in the middle of a rainstorm in commune Four and dump several packages. Eyewitnesses said the vehicle sped off after jettisoning the packages, he added.

Chor Heng said police investigations are underway, but they have yet to turn up many details relating to the marijuana that he estimated was worth tens of thousands of dollars. “We don’t know the source, but the quality is still good,” he said, adding that the drugs have been turned over to the municipal anti-drug police bureau.

Lour Ramin, secretary-general of the National Authority for Combating Drugs, said that those in possession of the marijuana may have been trying to get rid of it for fear of arrest. “For the first six months of 2007, we have destroyed about 10 kg [of marijuana] which were planted on a family farm,” he said.
