2.2 Million Tourists Visit In First 6 Months

More than 2.2 million tourists visited Cambodia in the first six months of this year, a 5.2 percent increase over the same period in 2013, according to Ministry of Tourism figures.

The country sending the largest number of visitors was Vietnam, followed by China and Korea, said Kong Sopheareak, director of statistics at the ministry.

Tith Chantha, a director-general at the ministry, noted that although tourist arrivals have risen, the rate of growth has slowed, in part because of political unrest in neighboring Thailand.

He also suggested that a string of high-profile plane crashes in the past few months may be making vacationers reluctant to fly.

“The lower growth is due to the situation in the neighboring countries like Thailand and the plane crash that makes tourists feel reluctant to make trips here,” he said.

In 2013, 2.92 million tourists visited in the first half of the year, up over 19 percent from the year before, according to government figures.

In the first six months of 2012, tourism arrivals were up nearly 27 percent over 2011.
