Seven young men have confessed to gang raping and then stabbing to death a 13-year-old girl on Saturday in Kompong Cham province, police said yesterday, calling the rape and murder of the young girl “brutal.”
A local farmer found the naked body of the young student, Chea Sovatey, lying in his field on Sunday, roughly 300 meters from her home in Suong town and less than a day after her family had filed a complaint over her disappearance. She had been stabbed 12 times, robbed of her jewelry and her throat had also been slashed with a blade, Vihear Luong commune police chief Sok Chhean said
“This is brutal and ugly,” the commune police chief added.
Suong police chief Leang Eng said a neighbor of the slain girl, 20-year-old motorbike repairman Tes Sompouv, admitted to the crime under questioning and also implicated three of his friends. After the group of four was interrogated, three more men were implicated and arrested on Monday. The six other suspects are Seang Chumnit, 18; Phan Mao, 19; So Kavey, 20; Ma Lin, 20; Soy Savin, 22; and Pen Somol, 23, the chief of police said.
“All of the seven suspects confessed that they raped the girl,” he said. “We checked the girl’s body and found that she was stabbed 12 times with a knife,” he added, claiming that only one of the suspects, Tes Sampouv, had killed the girl.
The seven have not yet been charged, Mr Eng said, as the group have been transferred to Kompong Cham provincial police headquarters for further questioning. Nuon Samin, provincial police chief, could not be reached for comment.
Suspicion fell on the first man to be arrested, Tes Sompouv, when a relative of the victim told police that she had seen a knife underneath the seat of Tes Sompouv’s motorbike. Questioned by police, Tes Sompouv allegedly told police that he was driving the victim home from a local pagoda on Saturday night and used a chemical-soaked scarf to render her unconscious.
Taking the girl to a forested spot 300 meters from her house, Tes Sompouv then allegedly phoned his six friends to meet him, Mr Eng said. The group began drinking and then took turns raping the unconscious victim.
The attackers also stole platinum jewelry from the 13-year-old and sold it, Mr Eng said, adding that police are currently looking for the person or persons who purchased the stolen goods.
Commune chief Y Laytheng said Tes Sompouv and the victim were longtime neighbors and acquaintances. He, like others, called the rape and murder a “really brutal case.”
“The suspects stabbed her in the back and the stomach and cut her neck since they were afraid that the girl might recover and cause them trouble,” he said.
