12 Jailed After Wedding Leaves 1 Dead, 1 Injured

Twelve men remained Wednesday in a Phnom Penh jail after a Sunday night wedding brawl that left one man dead and another injured. Among the detainees is the groom.

He allegedly joined 11 friends to attack a rival group of three men, throwing stones at them and beating them with iron and wood clubs.

“The twelve men have been detained for questioning,” said Chhim Bunroth, deputy police chief of Dangkao commune in Dangkao district.

He said the suspects would be kept in custody until they admitted which one fatally beat Korm Dina, 23, with an iron club.

The other victim, Sok Pheakdey, 22, was badly injured and recovered consciousness after sustaining serious head injuries. Mr. Bunroth said that the brawl had erupted after the three men tried to buy sugarcane juice from a vendor near the wedding tent.

The juice vendor was not there, so the three men decided to stand outside the tent and watch the wedding attendees dancing.

This infuriated the groom and his 11 friends, who were among the dancers. They rushed outside to beat the bystanders.
