Coronavirus claims first life in China’s capital, as spread continues across the globe

China’s capital Beijing has reported its first death caused by the new coronavirus, as more cases of infection are reported around the world despite unprecedented efforts to stop its spread.

State television reported that a 50-year-old man who had been to Wuhan, the centre of the coronavirus outbreak, had died after being diagnosed with the virus on January 22.

China said 81 people had died of the virus and the number of people infected had risen above 3,000. But it was not immediately clear if the latest death was included in the total.
