Cambodia: Laos dam project raises concerns

Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam have urged Laos to better assess the trans-boundary impacts and strengthen proposed measures to reduce any negative impacts as the 1,460MW Luang Prabang hydropower project moves forward.

At a special joint committee session of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) on June 30, the three countries said they appreciated the Laos government’s submission of the project for prior consultation.

They praised Laos’ cooperation in providing additional data and documents and willingness to accommodate comments and recommendations from member countries, according to a July 1 MRC press release.
