The European Union is betting a multi-billion dollar bargaining chip will force concessions from Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen in a high-stakes manoeuvrer that has moved into its final stage.
The Cambodian government has received the EU’s draft ruling on whether it intends to suspend the preferential trade treatment that helps Cambodia export billions of dollars worth of textiles to the European trading block.
The report will not be made public, but EU trade commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said on Twitter that the EU is “very concerned about the human rights situation there”.
