Young Father Charged Over Murder of Infant Son

The Tbong Khmum Provincial Court on Friday charged a young father with aggravated murder after he confessed to beating his 2-month-old son to death on Tuesday night during an alcohol-fueled argument with his girlfriend—the infant’s mother—earlier that evening, an official said.

Chan Doul, Memot district police chief, said that 20-year-old cassava farmer Auk Channa admitted to having killed the baby while being questioned by deputy prosecutor Teav Ponnareay and Judge Chhit Vinea on Friday.

“The suspect confessed to the court that he smashed his baby to the floor, causing him to die,” Mr. Doul said, adding that the suspect was remanded to the Kompong Cham Provincial Prison, where he will await trial.

Mr. Channa had been drinking with friends on Tuesday afternoon outside his house in Memot district’s Romchek commune when he began quarreling with his 18-year-old girlfriend about his drinking habits, deputy district police chief Chan Doul said at the time of his arrest.

Mr. Channa accused his girlfriend of having an affair and suggested that he was not the father of their newborn son, before grabbing the baby from her and smashing him twice against the floor.
