A 69-year-old woman was sentenced to three years in prison on Thursday for severe physical abuse against her great-niece that left the 10-year-old covered in bruises and scars before the girl was rescued by a local radio station.
Sous Vichearandy, a spokesman for the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, said the woman was sentenced for aggravated intentional acts of violence.
She was arrested in July last year after a neighbor alerted ABC Radio of the abuse.
The radio station notified authorities and took her into its care.
The station later told of evidence that the girl’s skull had been smashed against a hard object.
Khem Vannak, an ABC employee, said on Thursday that the girl was still being looked after by the station and was currently attending Grade 1 at a local school.
