Woman Found Dead in Lake; Friend Sought by Police

Vendors found a 23-year-old woman’s submerged body a few meters from the bamboo picnic bungalow where she had been relaxing with a friend at a resort on Tonle Bati lake on Wednesday, police said.

Chea Socheat’s throat had been cut three times, and her female friend is being sought by police, said Ngann Sary, police chief of Takeo province’s Bati district.

Vendors at the Tonle Bati Resort in Kraing Thnong commune had gone looking for Chea Socheat at about 10 a.m. after noticing blood on the mat in the bungalow, he said.

“The tool that was used to slice the victim’s throat wasn’t found at the scene. However, we assume the victim’s throat was slit with a knife,” Mr. Sary said.

Huy Kimseang, a shopkeeper near the thatched huts, said the owner of the resort, Nov Sothy, saw the victim arrive on a motorbike with a friend and order food, but that her companion had left before the food was delivered.

When the woman drove away on a motorbike, she told the owner that she would be back after fetching friends and that Chea Socheat was rowing a boat, Ms. Kimseang said.

District police have not yet identified a suspect.
