Woman Charged Over Murdering in a Jealous Rage

A woman accused of killing another woman with a large wooden stick in a jealous rage last week was charged and sent to the Preah Vihear Provincial Prison on Monday morning, according to officials—a day after the provincial police chief said it was her husband who carried out the murder.

Chan Noeun, 58, was bludgeoned to death after drinking with her married neighbors on Thursday, during which the wife, Ning Pham, began accusing her husband of having feelings for Ms. Noeun.

While the provincial police chief said Sunday that the victim was raped and murdered by the husband, the wife was charged on Monday.

“She was charged with intentional violence with aggravated circumstances,” said provincial prosecutor Ly Lon, explaining that there was no intention to kill.

Deputy provincial police chief Keo Chamroeun said Ms. Pham, 50, had confessed to the violence under questioning.

Sy Kiri, the provincial police chief, on Monday retracted his original version of events.

“I’m sorry for the fact that I was confused with the information and reported it to you,” he said.
