A 60-year-old woman was arrested on Monday for allegedly trying to smuggle 3.49 grams of crystal methamphetamine to her son in Kandal Provincial Prison by hiding it inside mango seeds in a bag of whole and sliced fruit, provincial officials said.
Sat Borany, who went to the prison on Monday afternoon to visit her son Dim Ratha, 29, was stopped by prison guards during a routine search of those entering the facility, deputy prison director Chhoun Chanthorn said.
Guards who cut into the fruit found “10 small bags of crystal meth hidden in two mango seeds, which were assembled with superglue,” he said on Tuesday.
Chhoeun Sok Chet, deputy provincial police chief, said police officers took Ms. Borany to their headquarters on Monday, where she was questioned and detained.
She will be sent to the provincial court today for questioning, he added.
Prosecutor Lim Sokuntha said he questioned Mr. Ratha at the prison on Tuesday but had not yet sent his report to the investigating judge.
Mr. Ratha is serving a sentence for robbery.
