Unlicensed Medic Arrested for ‘Reckless’ Operation

An unlicensed medic was arrested in Kandal province’s Kien Svay district on Friday night after one of his patients died within 24 hours of receiving treatment, police said on Sunday.

Deputy district police chief Vorng Se said Ly Min, 62, was arrested at his house in Chhoeuteal commune after a village chief alerted authorities of the death.

Mr. Vorng said the victim, Ngov Thy Phourng, a 60-year-old Vietnamese woman, had come to Cambodia with her 18-year-old son earlier this month shortly after having surgery in Vietnam, and was staying at a local Buddhist center.

The surgery wound below her right armpit was giving her pain on Thursday, he said, so she sought treatment from Mr. Min, who had been practicing medicine without a license for years.

Though the woman’s son told police that Mr. Min had simply given his mother medicine, Mr. Se said the examining doctors suspected he may have also performed surgery that worsened the wound.
