Two Shootings, 1 Fatal, Within Hours in Capital

Two people were shot in different Phnom Penh districts within hours on Friday night and early Saturday morning, according to officials.

A security guard driving a motorbike to check on his subordinates was injured in an alleged drive-by shooting in Russei Keo district’s Tuol Sangke I commune on Friday evening.

Nhean Sophat, 31, is in serious condition at Preah Kossamak Hospital after being shot in his chin, right arm and right side of his chest, according to news website Fresh News.

Hours later, a woman was fatally shot while waiting for motorbike repairs at about 3 a.m. in Pur Senchey district’s Choam Chao commune, said commune police chief Theng Kosal.

Mol Sim, 32, was with four friends when four suspects approached a neighboring shop, Mr. Kosal said.

When Mol Sim tried to talk to the group after catching them staring at her, one took a gun out of a bag and shot her in the forehead, killing her instantly, he said.

Phnom Penh deputy municipal police chief Song Ly confirmed the two cases on Sunday and said police are working hard to identify leads.
