Two police officers who allegedly forged the signature of Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district police chief on a family book were charged and sent to provisional detention on Wednesday, a spokesman said.
Boeng Tompun commune police deputy chief Keo Savuth and Meanchey district police officer Suon Sovan were charged with forging Teng Sino’s signature on the yellow family book, said Ly Sophanna, a spokesman for the Phnom Penh Municipal Court.
“The court has charged them with forgery of a public document and the use of a forged public document,” Mr. Sophanna said.
The first charge carries a prison sentence of five to 10 years for those found guilty, while the second carries a sentence of two to five years.
Bun Satya, chief of the city’s minor crimes bureau, said both suspects were awaiting trial in jail.
“They were sent to prison this morning,” Mr. Satya said.
The family books, which people are required to keep by law, are meant to cost less than $10, but the accused pair had charged a villager $80 for the forged signature, Mr. Satya said on Monday.
