Soldiers shot at a group of six illegal rosewood loggers who crossed the border into Thailand’s Surin province on Monday, killing at least one man, according to a logger involved in the incident.
Another logger was reported missing after Thai soldiers started shooting at the group as they were returning home to Oddar Meanchey province at about noon on Tuesday, said logger Hul Yet, 49.
“We were shot at from about 10 meters away,” Mr. Yet said. “They were shooting to kill.”
Kong Khna, Anlong Veng district’s military commander, confirmed that Thai soldiers killed one man, but said a body had not been recovered.
He said his officers would continue to search for the missing men today.
Mr. Yet identified the slain man as Ieth Oun. Ieth Oun’s wife, Ting Chreng, said her husband had crossed the border into Thailand four or five times in the past without a problem.
Those who returned from the latest trip “said they saw Thai soldiers shoot him and he fell down,” she said. “I feel shocked that I have lost my husband.”
