Two Garment Factory Workers Killed in Bus Accident

A tour bus operated by the Mey Hong Transport company hit and killed two garment workers as they were walking across National Road 1 in Svay Rieng province on Monday evening, a union official said on Tuesday.

Sok Khemara, a representative of the Collective Union of Movement of Workers based in Svay Rieng, said that Sao Chin and Phim Sivorn worked at the GF Inspection factory in Svay Teap district and were on their way home at about 5:30 p.m. when the accident occurred.

“They had just gotten off a truck on the highway and were crossing the road when the bus crashed into them very quickly,” Mr. Khemara said, adding that both workers died from their injuries en route to a hospital in Vietnam.

“In accordance with the law, the bus company must pay compensation to the victims’ families,” Mr. Khemara said, adding that the bus, which stopped at the scene of the crash, was later impounded by police.

Phauk Sokhon, deputy provincial police chief in charge of traffic, and Ouch Saran, chief of the provincial force’s traffic bureau, confirmed that two workers were killed in the accident but knew nothing more about the case.
