Three Dead in Ambulance Crash; Driver Flees

An ambulance crashed head-on into a motorbike in Kompong Cham province on Saturday, killing the motorbike’s driver and two passengers riding on the back.

The ambulance driver fled the scene and remained at large, a police official said on Sunday.

The collision happened on a section of National Road 6 in Batheay district’s Pha’av commune that had been cut down to a single lane due to road repairs, deputy district police chief Souk Soul said.

He said the crash, at about 8:30 a.m., was due to the motorbike driver’s carelessness.

“This accident happened because the motorbike driver [was] not paying attention when overtaking,” he said, naming the driver as 17-year-old Phat Chemouy, and the passengers as Ann Za, 17, and Phal Khlim, 18.

Mr. Soul added that the patient inside the ambulance, who was en route to Phnom Penh from Kratie province, was later picked up by a taxi and taken to the hospital unharmed.
