Thirteen Injured in Separate Van Crashes

A Virak Buntham van driven by a sleepy driver crashed into the back of a truck carrying sand along National Road 5 in Battambang province’s Mong Russei district on Wednesday, injuring 10 passengers, eight of them severely, police said.

The accident occurred at about 5:30 a.m. when the van belonging to the Virak Buntham Express Tours & Travel company, which was carrying passengers from Phnom Penh, crashed into the truck traveling in the same direction, said district traffic police chief Doeun Sambath.

“The driver was sleepy and driving at high speed, and there was no sign on the road of the car braking,” he said.

The injured passengers and the van driver, who broke his leg, were hospitalized.

In a separate incident in Preah Sihanouk province, a Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications’ van crashed into a motorbike that turned into the vehicle’s path on Tuesday evening, police said.

Hun Bunthoeun, 35, who was driving the motorbike, and his wife, Duong Khar, 33, turned left in front of the van, which was traveling in the opposite direction, said Prom Pov, the province’s traffic police chief.

The couple was hospitalized with severe injuries, he said.
