Teen Dealer Jailed After Fatal Raid Seeks Pardon

A teenager sentenced in December to four years in prison for involvement in a drug trafficking ring sought a royal pardon during an appeal hearing on Wednesday.

Trav Ritheara, 18, was among five men convicted after a fatal police raid on a Phnom Penh villa last April in which the suspected drug ringleader was killed.

Four other defendants also appealed their convictions at the Court of Appeal on Wednesday.

Ly Virak, 37, who was arrested at the scene, had been sentenced to five years for drug trafficking and joining a criminal group.

Ty Eang, 47, and Sun Daro, 23, also received five-year sentences on the same charges.

Ly Kokhuy, 65, was sentenced to four years for drug trafficking plus illegal weapons possession.

Sim Siphan, Mr. Ritheara’s lawyer, said the other men either requested sentence reductions or denied their guilt.

“For my client, he suggested a pardon, because he wasn’t involved with the drug trafficking,” Mr. Sim said.

A verdict on the appeals is expected on May 29.
