Taxi Driver Charged, Connected to Drug Ring

A taxi driver was being held in Phnom Penh’s Prey Sar prison on Thursday after being charged on Wednesday for his alleged role in transporting 54 kg of heroin and methamphetamine, confiscated during a police crackdown on a suspected trafficking ring in May, an official said.

Phnom Penh Municipal Court charged Thaong Vang, 36, with drug trafficking, said In Song, an officer at the Interior Ministry’s anti-drug department.

“He transported the drugs from Stung Treng province to Phnom Penh,” Mr. Song said.

Mr. Vang was arrested in front of his Stung Treng City home on Tuesday by anti-drug officers and provincial police, Mr. Song added.

Syla Loy, owner of a hotel in Ratanakkiri province’s Banlung City, and his alleged accomplice, Loung Sopha, were charged with drug trafficking in May after they were arrested during raids allegedly connected to a regional drug syndicate, police said at the time.

Mr. Song said on Thursday that others were likely involved, including some in Cambodia and a ringleader in Laos.
