Storms Damage Nearly 700 Homes, Kill 2

Nearly 700 homes were damaged, two people were killed and at least 10 people injured in storms that struck Stung Treng and Kompong Cham provinces on Wednesday, officials said.

In Stung Treng province’s Thala Barivat district, three men were struck by lightning, killing two instantly and leaving the third injured, said provincial police chief Mao Dara.

Another man was critically injured when heavy rain caused his house to collapse on him around 7 p.m. that evening, he said. “The victims were sent to the Stung Treng provincial hospital, and they are getting better and better,” Mr. Dara said.

Heavy rains in Kompong Cham on Wednesday evening damaged 682 homes across three districts—leaving 146 destroyed—and injured eight people, according to the National Committee for Disaster Management spokesman Keo Vy.

On Tuesday, 69-year-old Mang Long was burned alive when lightning struck the thatched roof of her home in Kompong Speu province’s Phnom Sruoch district, district governor Pich Chantha said on Thursday, adding that the woman was disabled, widowed and alone at home.
