Soldiers Questioned in Forestry Official’s Death

Questioning continued on Wednesday of three soldiers from an artillery unit and two other suspects in a fatal shooting at a Forestry Administration office in Kompong Chhnang province, authorities said.

“Two suspected detainees are at my police headquarters and three other suspects are detainees at military police headquarters,” provincial police chief Loch Sovannara said.

Two masked gunmen sprayed bullets through the office in Toek Phos district’s Kdolsenchey commune on Tuesday night, killing a 54-year-old forestry officer, and injuring a deputy district military police commander and two neighbors, officials said.

On Wednesday, officials said investigators were looking into whether the shooting was ordered by a disgruntled wood trader, but “we still haven’t made any conclusions,” Meas Sovann, a provincial military police commander, said on Wednesday.

Officials will compare bullet casings left at the scene with a gun in their possession, Mr. Sovannara said. “Those suspects have not confessed yet,” he said. “We will examine the gun and bullet casings. If they match, we will arrest them.”
