Deputy opposition leader Kem Sokha, holed up at his party’s headquarters since May to avoid arrest, is set to leave this morning to register to vote, according to a senior CNRP official.
“It’s true; he will go register,” said party lawmaker Eng Chhay Eang, adding that Mr. Sokha would vote in Phnom Penh rather than in Kompong Cham province, which he represents in parliament and where he cast his vote in the 2013 national election.
“He will go to register for the election in Phnom Penh because his home is in Phnom Penh,” he said.
Mr. Sokha announced last week that he would leave the CNRP headquarters to register, despite a five-month prison sentence handed to him last month for failing to appear for questioning over a prostitution case widely seen as politically motivated.
Authorities have said they will not attempt to arrest him until the appeals process is ended.
Mr. Chhay Eang said the party would decide this morning whether Mr. Sokha would vote in Meanchey district, where the party headquarters are, or in Tuol Kok district, where his home is.
Mr. Sokha will return to the CNRP headquarters after registering.
