The Senate’s permanent committee is set to meet today to consider a request to strip opposition Senator Thak Lany of her immunity from prosecution.
The 10-member permanent committee will review the Court of Appeal’s request, which was made on Friday, at about 8 a.m., Senate spokesman Mam Bun Neang said.
The committee could decide to send the request to the full CPP-controlled Senate for a vote or return it to the Appeal Court prosecutor for additional review.
Ms. Lany has twice missed scheduled questioning at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court over allegations that she pinned the murder of political analyst Kem Ley on Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Mr. Hun Sen sued the senator earlier this month for allegedly accusing him in a speech of personally ordering Kem Ley’s July 10 killing. She has denied the claim and said the video in which she apparently makes the accusations was doctored.
Sam Sokong, Ms. Lany’s lawyer, said she had not appeared for questioning because she has immunity and “because the investigation is happening without obvious evidence.”
He said she would consider appearing if the Senate removes her immunity.
