Two Russians and a Kazakh found relaxing on the beach in Sihanoukville after sailing into Cambodia from Vietnam without visas were arrested on Sunday evening, police said on Monday.
The two Russians, 29-year-old man Mikhail Smolin and 20-year-old woman Anastasiia Gudimenko, were arrested with 53-year-old Kazakh citizen Vitaliy Yartsev, provincial deputy police chief Hun Sorithy said.
“We arrested them at around 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Bei commune near the provincial hall while they were resting on the beach after we got information,” he said. “Our law does not allow any foreigners coming in without visas except Asean [citizens] for whom we use in and out stamps.”
The trio were known to be tourists who were also working, he said, declining to elaborate on the circumstances of their entry. Uk Heisela, chief of investigations at the Ministry of Interior’s immigration department, said the trio could face a range of consequences.
“We will ask them first if they came for a long time without visas. We will expel them, and if they just accidentally came after losing their way while sailing, we might let them ask for a visa correctly at the border checkpoint,” he said.
