Rice Farmer Confesses to Raping Teen Neighbor

A 14-year-old girl was beaten, raped and left in a nearby pond near her home in Svay Rieng province on Tuesday night, police said on Wednesday.

Rice farmer Prum Sarin, 42, snuck into his neighbor’s house in Svay Chrum district at about 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and was attempting to steal chickens when the victim caught him, said Keo Sotha, chief of the provincial police’s minor crimes bureau.

Mr. Sotha said that the suspect slammed the victim’s head against the floor until she was unconscious, then proceeded to rape her and drag her outside to a pond behind the house.

After finding her daughter lying waist-deep in the water, the victim’s mother alerted commune police, who arrested the suspect at his house for child rape and attempted murder at about 9:30 p.m., Mr. Sotha said.

The suspect confessed at the provincial police headquarters and will be sent to the provincial court for questioning today, he said, adding that the victim had returned home after a medical examination at a hospital.
