Reward Increased for Location of Murder Suspect

High-ranking officials have donated a further 15 million riel (about $3,750) of their own money as a reward for information that leads to the arrest of a murder suspect who was possibly posing as a military police officer.

The suspect, who went by the name Oum Sopha, but has not been officially identified, has been on the run after gunning down his girlfriend, clothing vendor Sok Sreyleak, 25, at the Sary Thom guesthouse in Phnom Penh’s Russei Keo district on Saturday.

Soon after, military police put up a $5,000 reward for leads.

Chhorn Sina, deputy director of the Interior Ministry’s general department of prisons, said on Tuesday that he would donate a further 5 million riel (about $1,250), as would Run Rathveasna, the public order department director, and Chout Hout, the military police’s deputy director of staff.

“We want to speed up the investigation,” Mr. Sina said.

Military police spokesman Eng Hy said the initial reward had been offered because the case “affected the reputation” of the military police.

The suspect dropped what appeared to be a military police-issued helmet and ID card while fleeing on Saturday.
