Police Officer Accused of Murdering His Mistress

A married provincial police officer shot and killed his long-time girlfriend out of “jealousy,” an Oddar Meanchey province official said on Thursday.

Voeun Borin, an officer with the provincial minor crimes bureau, used an AK-47 to shoot Ry Srey Pov in the head at his home in Samraong City at about 10 p.m. on Wednesday, according to deputy provincial police chief Loek Sokha.

Mr. Sokha did not answer questions about Mr. Borin’s whereabouts and status, but local media outlet Fresh News said in an online report that police were still searching for Mr. Borin, whom they identified as a captain.

The suspect, who had a 15-month-old child with Ry Srey Pov, had been drinking at home with friends earlier on the night of the shooting, and later a neighbor reported hearing an argument and the sound of a gunshot, Mr. Sokha said.

“The violence began from jealousy,” he said.

Mr. Borin and Ry Srey Pov met when the victim, a former karaoke worker, moved from Battambang province’s Thma Koul district to Oddar Meanchey province, Mr. Sokha said.

“They had been together for a few years,” he added.
