Police Nab Suspects in Poipet City Casino Scam

Banteay Meanchey provincial military police arrested six Thai nationals and three Cambodians on Sunday for allegedly fleecing 131 investors in their Poipet City gambling business out of more than $500,000.

Three Thai women, three Thai men and three Cambodian women were nabbed in Poipet commune’s T Club Casino, where they had rented space to run the gambling business, according to Poipet City military police commander Chea Da.

Mr. Da said the investors had paid between $3,000 and $10,000 each for a share in the business, the nature of which he did not know.

Many of the investors, who lived in or had relatives in the area, told military police that they had received several payments from one of the Thai men, but reported him on Sunday when it became clear that the $506,200 they collectively invested would not be returned.

Provincial military police commander Or Borin said the group had been detained at the provincial military police headquarters for questioning, which was set to resume this morning.
