One of Three Men Nabbed a Decade After Rape

Ten years after a mentally ill woman was allegedly raped by three men at a wedding, police have arrested one of the suspects in Kandal province, officials said on Thursday.

Ngor Meng, 48, was arrested at his home in Koh Thom district’s Kompong Kong commune on Wednesday after a neighbor reported his return for the first time since a complaint was filed against him in 2006, said Uy Chheng, the district’s deputy police chief.

The two other suspects, whom police did not identify, fled the area after the incident and remain at large, he said.

The provincial court issued arrest warrants for the three men after the woman’s parents filed a complaint about eight months after the incident, the district officer said.

Mr. Meng returned to the commune after his wife provided compensation to the victim’s family, assuming he was no longer wanted by police, Mr. Chheng said.

“Even if the suspect gives compensation to the victim’s family, the suspect still has the criminal complaint,” he said.

Provincial police chief Eav Chamroeun said the suspect was sent to court on Thursday for questioning.
