One Dead, One Injured in Sand Dredging Accident

A cable being used to pull a dredging barge out of a riverine shoal snapped and struck two foreign workers in Ratanakkiri province on Saturday, killing one and seriously injuring the other, officials said on Monday.

Guo Guangbin, 51, a Chinese national, died on Sunday in a Phnom Penh hospital, and Chroeung Se, 60, a Vietnamese national, remained hospitalized after the incident, said Andong Meas district police chief Sovan Phin.

“We are now working to collect information about the accident and we will bring the company’s representative in for questioning,” Mr. Phin said.

The two men worked for Raksmey Mangkol, a Chinese company that recently received a license to dredge sand from the Sesan River in Andong Meas, according to Hun Bunthan, provincial mines and energy department director.

“The barge was stuck in a big pile of sand and the two people used another barge and tried to pull the barge,” he said. “Then, the box of the wire cable came apart and they were struck with the cable.”
