Official Charged Over Death Threat Against PM

An Interior Ministry official is facing up to two years in prison for allegedly posting a death threat against Prime Minister Hun Sen and his family on the premier’s Facebook page, a court spokesman said on Thursday.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court charged Leang La, 45, deputy chief of the ministry’s accounting and logistics office, with making a death threat on Wednesday, spokesman Y Rin said.

A report on the National Police website says that “Mr. La confessed that he used a Facebook account by the name Leala Leang to make comments to curse Samdech Hun Sen.”

A screenshot circulated online on Tuesday shows what looks to be Leala Leang’s comment posted under a video, saying “Hun Sen is about to die, a warning to all the Hun family to flee before 2018.

Your fate of dying or going to jail is unavoidable.”

Mr. La is being detained at Prey Sar prison, Mr. Rin said.

In a speech on Thursday, Mr. Hun Sen said, “Making insults on Facebook is still happening, which can lead to death threats…. They don’t think when it goes out that we know.”
