Notorious Police Chief Loses Yet Another Top Posting

Mao Pov, who made headlines for having fired his gun into a Siem Reap City hotel ceiling during a boozy night out in 2012, lost yet another provincial police post this week, this time in Tbong Khmum province.

Brigadier General Pov was removed as Preah Vihear provincial police chief in 2012 after firing multiple shots into the hotel ceiling during a drunken argument, but landed in the same post in Tbong Khmum two years later.

According to a letter signed by Interior Minister Sar Kheng on Monday, he now has lost that job too.

The letter, published online on Tuesday by local media, offers no explanation, but says Brig. Gen. Pov will be made a deputy director of the ministry’s planning department.

Brig. Gen. Pov could not be reached on Tuesday.

National Police Commissioner Neth Savoeun and Interior Ministry undersecretary of state Chan Ean, who both signed off on the letter, declined to comment.

According to the letter, the Tbong Khmum post will be filled today by Ben Ratha, the police chief of Kompong Cham province.

Replacing Major General Ratha in Kompong Cham will be Brigadier General Em Kosal, one of his deputies.
